Reflection on a movie "The Social Network"

By: Sarita Sok

The movie is about Mark Zuckerberg, Harvard University’s student, who creates a social webpage to enhance communication between students.

At first, Mark hacked the university security system. He took all the picture of female students and create a webpage for everyone to go on and rate them. He was suspended from school for a while.

Seeing his potential in code writing, the Winklevoss twins who had always been trying to create a social network for Harvard University students called “HarvardConnection” asked him to join their team. Instead of cooperating with their team, he decided to create a social network on his own with financial support from his close friend, Eduardo Saverin and named it “The Facebook”.

The site has become popular in a short time and soon Mark and Eduardo decided to expand it to many famous universities in the United States. The Winklevoss twins then sued Mark for stealing their intellectual property. They were later settled.

During that time, they met Sean Parker, co-founder of Napster and they work together. Since then “The Facebook” became “Facebook”. Sean has made many appointments for Mark with large companies to get more investment. Eduardo, who was the CFO, signed on the contract of the investment.

However, Mark issued more shares which reduced the number of shares that Eduardo owned to very little. As a result, Eduardo sued Mark for spending the company’s money on his personal expenses, and they were later settled with a non-disclosure contract.

Since then, Facebook has become a widely well-known social network that has taken communication to another level and made Mark Zuckerberg one of the world’s one of the youngest billionaires.
